Philadelphia police are looking into an incident in which an off-duty officer fired shots at individuals suspected of stealing his vehicle early Monday morning in the Eastwick neighborhood, according to sources.
Crime scene investigators have cordoned off an area near S. 70th Street and Waxming Place, close to Lindbergh Avenue.
Sources indicate the suspects reportedly broke into a Dodge Charger belonging to the off-duty officer shortly after 3 a.m. on Monday.
The suspects reportedly pushed the car around the block and then tried to start it, sources said.
At some point, the off-duty officer came across the suspects at S. 70th Street and Waxming Place and discharged several rounds.
Investigators placed chalk circles around each of at least five shell casings found along 70th Street.
The suspects failed to take the Charger and fled in a stolen vehicle, according to sources.
Police have not disclosed where the Charger was originally taken from, and it remains unclear how the off-duty officer learned of the theft.
Officials said investigators believe the suspects escaped in a red Lexus ES 350 that had been reported stolen.
A Dodge Durango, which sources said also belongs to the off-duty officer, is being held at the scene.
The officer did not sustain any injuries.
