A disturbing discovery led to the arrest of a Delaware man after police said he brutally killed his 60-year-old mother and then attempted to cover up the crime.

David Lewis told police he found his mother, Valerra Lewis, covered in blood inside a bedroom after returning to his home on Three Rivers Court Friday.

When officers arrived, they found the 60-year-old suffering from multiple stab wounds. Investigators also discovered a blood-covered knife, large amounts of blood throughout the house, and a strong smell of cleaning products.

According to New Castle County Police, investigators determined that David fatally stabbed his mother multiple times with a knife.

Detectives also concluded that he attempted to destroy physical evidence connected to the killing by cleaning several items inside the home.

Authorities arrested David and charged him with murder, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, providing a false statement to law enforcement, and tampering with physical evidence.

Officials committed him to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $1,055,178 cash bail.
