40-Year-Old Cold Case in Clayton, Missouri Sees Breakthrough as DNA Leads to Suspect

A decades-old sexual assault case in Clayton, Missouri may finally be nearing resolution after authorities issued an arrest warrant for a man they believe is responsible for the 1986 attack.

According to newly released court records, investigators have charged Michael Mahoney in connection with the assault, which occurred near Oak Knoll Park more than four decades ago.

Police say the victim was walking home to her apartment when she was suddenly grabbed from behind by an attacker who threatened her with a knife. The suspect allegedly forced her into the park, where she was assaulted.

The case remained unsolved for years until recent advancements in forensic technology allowed investigators to reexamine evidence. Authorities say DNA collected from the victim’s clothing was matched to Mahoney, leading to the charges.

He is now facing counts of rape and forcible sodomy, according to officials.

The development marks the second recent breakthrough in a long-unsolved case in St. Louis County. Earlier this month, authorities arrested another suspect in a 1992 sexual assault case after using updated investigative techniques.

Prosecutors say such advancements are helping bring long-awaited answers to victims and their families.

“This gives a sense of closure to people who have waited decades for justice,” said St. Louis County Prosecutor Melissa Price Smith.

Officials say the investigation remains ongoing.
