A teen girl in Oregon went to her boyfriend’s apartment looking for a ride home , and ended up being taken away in an ambulance after he shot her. Her panicked texts to her mother were eventually presented during his trial.
Sky Alexander Korbut, 20, received a sentence of close to six years in the Oregon Department of Corrections, according to the Beaverton Police Department. A jury found him guilty in April on charges of second-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.

On Nov. 21, 2024, at approximately 4:50 a.m., Korbut and his 16-year-old girlfriend were inside his apartment on Southwest Prairie Terrace in Beaverton, Oregon , a city just west of Portland.
The teen had requested a ride home from Korbut and arrived at his residence, per court records reviewed by Portland NBC affiliate KGW. He had been apparently tidying his room and set a gun on a dog kennel before displaying it to the girl, who ordered him to “get it out of her face” and batted the weapon aside.
Prosecutors said Korbut fired at the girl just seconds after that.
Once the shooting happened, the girl fired off frantic messages to her mother.
“I got shot,” one message read, followed by “Mama,” “Plz,” and “Help me,” according to a screenshot provided to regional Fox affiliate KPTV. Her mother had been trying to get her location and had just messaged, “I thought u coming home.”
Korbut phoned 911 and informed dispatchers that “he had accidentally shot” his girlfriend, the Beaverton Police Department said. Officers responded to the scene and discovered the girl “suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries.”
A GoFundMe created for the teen stated she “was shot in her stomach” and that the wound affected “many organs and parts in her body.” Court filings indicated the bullet struck her intestines, gallbladder, liver, and pancreas, and that she “needed 20 liters of blood.”
Even though medical staff reportedly warned her relatives “there was a chance she might not make it,” the girl pulled through.
The man, who is now a convicted felon, was first taken into custody and charged with third-degree assault. But as the probe moved forward, that charge was elevated after “detectives uncovered additional evidence, including statements provided by the victim that contradicted Korbut’s account of the shooting.”
Korbut told investigators he had purchased the Smith & Wesson pistol illegally from someone “on the street” after being denied during background checks, court records show. He expressed confusion over how the weapon discharged, claiming he was “waving” the gun while moving it when “somehow, the gun went off.”
