An 18‑year‑old woman from Prince Frederick faces a second‑degree assault charge after she allegedly punched a correctional deputy in the face while he attempted to secure her with a handcuff at the Calvert County Detention Center, causing swelling and bruising near his right eye.
Gabriella Syniya Hill, 18, of Prince Frederick, was arrested on September 12 and charged with one misdemeanor count of second‑degree assault.
A statement of probable cause filed by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office indicates that a sheriff’s deputy responded to the Calvert County Detention Center at approximately 3:25 p.m. on September 12 to investigate a reported assault on a correctional deputy.
The charging documents state that the correctional deputy informed investigators that Hill was located in the detention center’s booking area while he escorted an inmate to a telephone.
The correctional deputy reported that Hill sat in a chair beside the phone; when he attempted to place a secure handcuff on her, she allegedly rose and struck him in the face.
The correctional deputy then executed a takedown, and several other correctional deputies helped restrain Hill, according to the statement of probable cause.
The investigating sheriff’s deputy reviewed surveillance footage from the detention center after interviewing the correctional deputy.
The charging document notes that the video shows the correctional deputy walking behind Hill as they moved from the shower area toward the telephone in the booking area.
The footage depicts Hill seated in a chair, then standing and delivering a closed‑fist blow with her left hand to the correctional deputy’s right eye region.
The video also shows the correctional deputy taking Hill to the ground while additional correctional deputies rushed to assist, as detailed in the charging documents.
The correctional deputy sustained swelling and mild bruising beneath his right eye, according to the statement of probable cause.
He informed investigators that he intends to have the injury evaluated at CalvertHealth Medical Center.
Authorities reported that Hill incurred no injuries during the incident.
Hill appeared before the Calvert County District Court on September 14 for a bail and bond review.
The court ordered her to be held without bond.
