Police on Thursday identified the student who died after being pulled from a pool at High Meadow in Granby on Wednesday.
Authorities identified the victim as 14-year-old Emari Marshall-Woodard, who was transported to Connecticut Children’s, where he was pronounced dead.
Marshall-Woodard was an 8th-grade student from Springfield, Massachusetts, according to police.
Granby police said they received a report of a drowning around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. A Simsbury officer working a private detail at the High Meadow venue responded and assisted the student, police said.
The Springfield School District issued a statement Thursday.
“Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, classmates, school staff, and all those whose lives have been touched by this unimaginable tragedy. Counselors and support staff are being made available to students and staff who may need assistance in the days and weeks ahead.”
High Meadow said in a statement they are “deeply saddened” by what happened:
This afternoon an eighth-grade boy on a field trip suffered a medical emergency in the pool and was taken by ambulance to the local hospital. Tragically, we learned that he passed away this evening. While we do not have any further information at this time, and therefore are unable to provide additional details, all of us at High Meadow are deeply saddened, and are praying for his family, friends, and classmates. In the meantime, we will continue to cooperate with the respective authorities in their review of the incident.
Several school districts were present at the venue on Wednesday, including Windham Middle School and students from Silas Deane Middle School in Wethersfield.
Granby police said multiple students were “overcome with emotions” after witnessing the incident, and ambulances from Granby, Windsor Locks, Simsbury, and Suffield responded to assist.
