The boat operator has been charged with multiple counts of reckless endangerment.
A man has been taken into custody in connection with a boat that overturned in New York Harbor, resulting in the deaths of a 5-month-old infant and a 27-year-old woman and the rescue of 12 other people, authorities said Sunday.
The operator, identified by the New York Police Department as 46-year-old Manuel Hernandez, was arrested on 13 counts of reckless endangerment.
The vessel, described by the Coast Guard as a 22-foot Bayliner, capsized around 10:30 p.m. Saturday close to Liberty Island in New York Harbor, sparking a large-scale rescue response, the NYPD reported.
NYPD divers and first responders from the New York Fire Department were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call, officials said.
Two individuals , an unidentified woman and a 5-month-old girl , were taken to NYU Langone Health Brooklyn, where they were subsequently pronounced dead, according to the NYPD.
Twelve people were pulled from the water and taken to area hospitals with minor injuries, the FDNY reported.
