STAMFORD — Authorities used surveillance video and witness accounts to connect a 39-year-old Stamford man to an attempted shooting on Towne Street earlier this year, according to an arrest warrant.
Court records show that Sergio Ricot faces charges of first-degree attempted assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, and illegal discharge of a firearm in connection with the Feb. 2 shooting.
Stamford police said Ricot fled to New York after the shooting, but officers later apprehended him during a traffic stop in Mamaroneck and brought him back to Connecticut.
The warrant states that police responded to Towne Street around 7:24 p.m. following a report of a shooting. Officers spoke with witnesses who said they heard an argument before gunfire erupted.
One resident told investigators they saw a thin individual dressed entirely in black, wearing a black face mask, pointing a firearm at a person running east on Market Street, according to police.
“She said that when she saw the firearm, she shut the blinds and then heard what sounded like two gunshots,” police wrote in the warrant.
Another witness reported seeing a person get out of a black Audi around the time of the shooting, which led an officer to recall passing a similar vehicle in their cruiser, the warrant states.
Data from the police vehicle’s automatic license plate reader confirmed that a 2014 Audi A8 was parked on Market Street and showed the car was registered to Ricot, police wrote.
The automated dashboard camera also captured an image of a Black man standing behind the vehicle and appearing to look down at his phone, according to the warrant.
Meanwhile, investigators recovered two 9mm shell casings while searching the area. Police later determined that Ricot held a valid pistol permit and had registered two 9mm handguns.
Police also obtained surveillance footage from nearby businesses that captured the shooting from multiple angles and showed two individuals running from the gunman.
In the warrant, police noted that the gunman appeared to be wearing clothing that matched what the individual seen in the police vehicle’s dashboard camera footage was wearing.
Authorities shared the information with other law enforcement agencies, and officers later stopped Ricot in Mamaroneck after he drove past an automated license plate reader on Interstate 95, officials said.
At the time, officers recovered a 9mm handgun loaded with ammunition that matched the shell casings found at the shooting scene, the warrant states.
Stamford police said officers took Ricot into custody on Feb. 18. Court records show he was released on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Stamford on June 3.
