NORTH HAVEN — A 21-year-old man suffered serious facial injuries Sunday evening after a fireworks incident at an Oakwood Drive residence, officials said.
“The victim is believed to have suffered a fractured eye socket, along with facial lacerations and burns,” North Haven Police Chief Andrew Stavrides said Monday morning. “The priority on scene was ensuring the victim received prompt medical treatment, and no other individuals were at risk for injury.”
First responders were dispatched to the residence just before 9 p.m., Fire Chief Paul Januszewski said. He said the victim suffered injuries “after reportedly igniting a firework that exploded near his face.” Januszewski said first responders rendered medical aid to the victim at the scene before taking him to Yale New Haven Hospital for further treatment.
Officials seized illegal fireworks at the scene, but they made no arrests in connection with the incident, Stavrides said. He said an investigation into the case remains ongoing.
“This incident serves as an important reminder that fireworks can cause serious injuries, including burns, eye trauma, and permanent disability,” Januszewski said. “The North Haven Fire Department strongly encourages residents to leave fireworks to licensed professionals and to follow all applicable state and local safety laws.”
