A woman lost her life following a series of hit-and-run crashes in the northern section of Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood Saturday night.
The pedestrian was the only person on foot caught up in the chain of collisions. According to police, the driver responsible not only failed to stop after striking the woman, but also crashed into other vehicles and continued driving.
At approximately 9:22 p.m., a 25-year-old woman stepped out from between two parked cars into the street in the 1400 block of West Irving Park Road, west of Southport Avenue, and was struck by a dark blue vehicle, police said.
Instead of stopping, the driver of the dark blue car continued west on Irving Park Road and collided with a dark-colored SUV, according to police. That crash triggered a chain-reaction collision in which the SUV then struck a black car.
Following the second impact, the driver of the SUV attempted to hold the man responsible for the crashes, but the suspect got back into his vehicle and drove away. He eventually crashed into a tree in front of Lake View High School.
The man then fled on foot and entered a building in the 4000 block of North Ashland Avenue. He was found and taken into custody, with charges pending as of Sunday morning.
The woman who was struck was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. The two other drivers involved, both men, refused medical treatment.
The identity of the woman who died has not yet been released.
