Man Accused of Triggering Gas Leak During Greenwich Home Burglary

Dangerous Break-In Sparks Emergency Response

GREENWICH — A man is facing serious criminal charges after allegedly causing a hazardous gas leak while breaking into a home in Greenwich, according to police.

Authorities said the incident occurred on April 4, when officers responded to reports of a gas leak along Pemberwick Road, near Comly Avenue and Grey Rock Drive, shortly before 8 a.m. The situation was severe enough that the Stamford Bomb Squad was called in to assist. No injuries were reported.

Suspect Allegedly Created Explosion Risk

Investigators later determined the gas leak was linked to a residential burglary involving Jeffrey Caviola.

Police allege that Caviola intentionally tampered with appliances inside the home, turning on the natural gas supply from the stove and removing the oven door, allowing gas to fill the residence. He also reportedly placed a toaster inside a microwave and turned it on — actions authorities say could have triggered a major explosion.

Extensive Property Damage Reported

In addition to creating a dangerous environment, officials say the suspect caused significant damage to the property during the break-in. Details on the total cost of damages have not been released.

Multiple Charges Filed After Arrest

Caviola was arrested on Tuesday and now faces several charges, including arson, burglary, illegal manufacture of a bomb, and criminal mischief.

Police also linked him to a separate commercial burglary on Post Road in Greenwich, where damages exceeded $15,000 and interior fixtures were reportedly destroyed.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have not released further details about the motive behind the incidents. The case remains under investigation.
