Ex-Daycare Teacher in Middletown Gets Jail Time in Toddler Mishandling Case

A former daycare worker in Middletown has been sentenced after pleading guilty in a case involving the mistreatment of young children under her care.

According to court records, Onima Rahman received a three-year prison sentence, which was suspended after 10 days served. She will also face three years of probation following her release.

The case stems from a 2024 investigation by local police into incidents at Town & Country Early Learning Center. Authorities said surveillance footage captured multiple instances in which Rahman and another teacher, Kristie Kovarcik, mishandled 2-year-old children at the facility.

Both employees were terminated after investigators notified daycare administrators of the allegations.

Rahman was arrested in August 2024 and charged with risk of injury to a minor and second-degree reckless endangerment. She later pleaded guilty to the risk of injury charge earlier this year.

The investigation also implicated Kovarcik, who was accused of more severe conduct, including an incident where a child was allegedly thrown across a room, resulting in a head injury. Medical evaluation confirmed the child suffered a contusion.

Kovarcik, who faced multiple charges including risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment, was sentenced separately in 2025.

Officials say the case highlights the importance of oversight and safety measures in childcare settings.
