Simi Valley Target attack suspect charged after release from custody less than a day earlier

The 34-year-old man accused of carrying out a violent attack inside a Simi Valley Target store that injured several people now faces attempted murder charges, as additional details about his background continue to surface.

According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, Rejean Tabor had been out of custody for less than 24 hours on June 17 after being released on mandatory supervision tied to two previous criminal cases. Around 6 p.m., he allegedly entered the Target store at 51 Tierra Rejada Road, approached a woman from behind and began strangling her while covering her nose and mouth.

A cellphone video captured much of the disturbing and seemingly random assault.

“As other shoppers rushed to help, Tabor allegedly attacked multiple Good Samaritans who intervened. One woman was pushed to the ground while attempting to pull Tabor away from the victim,” the DA’s office said. “Another shopper was allegedly bitten, struck and scratched while helping free the victim from the attacker.”

Authorities also accuse Tabor of throwing a glass bottle at a Target loss prevention employee and attacking a 16-year-old customer from behind.

Video from the scene shows Tabor engaged in a violent struggle with several people in the clothing section. The footage captures at least two women being knocked to the ground, while two men repeatedly confronted and wrestled with him.

At one point, a young girl is seen standing dangerously close to one of the ongoing altercations between Tabor and one of the men.

As the violence continued, Target employees began evacuating the store while police officers rushed to the scene.

Officers soon found Tabor inside the store after he allegedly started throwing merchandise in the grocery section and placed him under arrest.

Authorities said several customers, including the teenager, suffered minor injuries and received treatment at the scene before being released.

Family members took the woman who was attacked first to a local hospital, where she remained in stable condition as of Thursday. Investigators later learned that she had no prior connection to Tabor.

Prosecutors said Tabor has been charged with felony willful, deliberate and premeditated attempted murder for the strangulation attack on the first victim, in addition to other charges stemming from the assaults on multiple people.

“Tabor made his first court appearance today. No plea was entered, and criminal proceedings were suspended after the defense declared a doubt as to Tabor’s competency,” prosecutors said in a statement. “He remains in custody with bail set at $750,000 pending a competency hearing scheduled for July 16, 2026.”
