FAIRFIELD, Connecticut — After more than three years of investigation, authorities have made an arrest in the tragic 2022 birthday party shooting that claimed the life of 15-year-old Zion Burton.
Police confirmed that Tahnyi Johnson, now 20, has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting, which took place during a crowded celebration attended by both teens and adults.
Deadly Shooting at Fairfield Birthday Party
The incident unfolded on July 9, 2022, at a banquet hall adjacent to Calvin United Church of Christ on Kings Highway East.
Authorities responded to reports of gunfire and discovered two juveniles suffering from gunshot wounds. Burton later died at the hospital, just days before his 16th birthday, while another victim survived.
The shooting sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about safety at large gatherings.
Suspect Charged as Case Moves to Adult Court
Johnson, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, was initially processed under juvenile procedures. However, the case has since been transferred to adult court at Bridgeport Superior Court, making the proceedings public.
He now faces multiple felony charges, including:
- Murder
- First-degree assault with a firearm
- Illegal discharge of a firearm
- Carrying a pistol without a permit
A judge set his bond at $2 million, with a requirement to post 30% in cash.
Already in Custody on Separate Charges
Officials said Johnson has been held at Manson Correctional Youth Institution since August 2025 on unrelated charges, including assault and weapons violations.

According to Fairfield Police Department Chief Michael Paris, the arrest is the result of sustained investigative work rather than a single breakthrough.
“This arrest reflects tireless efforts, strong partnerships, and a commitment to justice,” Paris said.
He acknowledged that while the arrest cannot undo the loss suffered by Burton’s family, it represents a meaningful step toward accountability.
