Effective communication is a cornerstone of success on the football field. Whether through play calls, hand signals, or the chemistry built among teammates, the ability to communicate clearly is something every player depends upon.
For Arlington Bowie High School senior safety Kaleb Phifer, however, communication takes on an entirely different form.
As a deaf player, Phifer has learned to navigate the demands of competitive football in his own way, demonstrating that hearing loss does not diminish one’s capacity to compete, lead, or excel at the highest level.
Phifer first took up football in eighth grade, motivated by a deeply personal ambition , to make his mother proud and to achieve something no member of his family had accomplished before.
“No one in my family has made it big, and I just want to be the first,” Phifer said.
Throughout every step of his journey, one individual has remained a constant presence at his side: his interpreter, Tori Talor. The two have maintained a close working relationship since Phifer’s middle school years, cultivating a partnership that extends well beyond the boundaries of the classroom.
“Wherever Kaleb goes, I go,” Talor said.
Whether assisting with academic coursework or providing support across football, basketball, and track, Talor has consistently been there to help Phifer manage the demands of both school and athletics, while ensuring that his individual needs are properly addressed.
On the football field, Phifer utilizes cochlear implants that connect directly to his coaches’ FM system. This technology enables him to receive instructions from the coaching staff in real time , including defensive coverage calls , keeping him fully engaged with the flow of the game.
This was not always the case, however.
During his first two seasons as a football player, Phifer competed without the assistance of his cochlear implants. Talor has described watching him absorb the fundamentals of the game, communicate his needs to his teammates, and discover ways to succeed without any assistive devices as one of the most profoundly rewarding aspects of their shared journey.
That unwavering determination has earned Phifer considerable respect among both his teammates and coaches.
Arlington Bowie head football coach Joseph Sam describes Phifer as a “lead by example type of football player.”
Sam has also referred to him as the “quarterback of our back end,” a characterization that underscores the critical leadership role Phifer fulfills within the team’s defensive secondary.
The Bowie football program has welcomed Phifer as a fully integrated member of the team, holding him to the same standards as every other player. Talor has noted that Phifer and his teammates frequently develop their own unique handshakes and celebratory gestures , a testament to the genuine bonds they have formed that transcend verbal communication entirely.
As Phifer now looks ahead to the next phase of his football career, the results of his dedication are becoming increasingly evident. He has received multiple offers to play football at the collegiate level.
Despite the promising opportunities that lie before him, Phifer hopes that his legacy will ultimately be defined by more than athletic achievement alone. He aspires to be remembered as an exceptional football player who happened to be deaf , not the other way around.
For Talor, the conclusion of Phifer’s high school career also marks the close of a deeply meaningful chapter in their shared story.
She has expressed that parting ways professionally brings a sense of sadness, yet she remains immensely proud to witness him pursue his ambitions. Talor intends to continue as one of his most devoted supporters as he embarks on the road ahead.
Though her professional work with Phifer may be drawing to a close, her connection to the Bowie community is far from over.
Phifer’s younger brother, who is also deaf, is expected to enroll at Arlington Bowie during the upcoming school year. Talor has indicated that she plans to serve as his interpreter as well, extending the same steadfast support she has provided to the Phifer family throughout the years.
