California police fatally shoot 16-year-old boy after he allegedly stabbed mother’s boyfriend

A 16-year-old boy who police say was under the influence and stabbed his mother’s boyfriend inside a Santa Ana apartment was shot and killed by at least one Santa Ana police officer while he was still holding the knife when officers arrived Sunday night, June 14, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. in the 3400 block of South Main Street after officers responded to a call about a family disturbance inside an apartment, Santa Ana police spokeswoman Officer Natalie Garcia said.

A 53-year-old man placed the call, telling police that his girlfriend’s son was under the influence, vandalizing the apartment and had stabbed him at least once, Garcia said.

When officers arrived, they heard arguing coming from inside the apartment, Garcia said.

Officers entered the apartment and found the boy still armed, giving him multiple commands to drop the weapon, but he refused, which led to the shooting, police said.

The boy died at the scene, Garcia said.

The man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the boy’s mother also suffered non-life-threatening injuries that were treated at the scene.

Garcia said a knife and other weapons were found inside the apartment, though the other types of weapons were not immediately disclosed.

It remained unclear what specifically led to the shooting, and how many officers fired their weapons was also unclear.
