A bizarre attempted vehicle burglary in New Orleans escalated into a dangerous shooting after suspects were startled by a mannequin dressed as a horror movie character.
Mannequin Meant to Deter Theft Triggers Gunfire
The vehicle owner said he placed a mannequin wearing a mask inspired by Michael Myers in the passenger seat of his pickup truck to discourage break-ins.
However, when a group of suspected burglars tried to enter the truck, they were apparently frightened by the figure and reacted by opening fire.
Dozens of Shots Fired
According to the owner, one suspect jumped back and began shooting, prompting others to join in.
- Around 30+ rounds were fired
- The truck was left with nearly 20 bullet holes
- Two additional vehicles were also struck
- Bullets hit a nearby home, just above where residents were sleeping
Shell casings from multiple calibers were found scattered across the street.
Residents Woken by Gunfire
Neighbors described the chaos as alarming, with many initially mistaking the rapid gunfire for fireworks.
One resident said the volume of shots made it clear something serious was happening, calling it a frightening incident that could have easily turned deadly.
No Arrests Yet
Police said surveillance footage shows the suspects fleeing the scene in a silver sedan. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Owner Rethinks Deterrent Strategy
Following the incident, the truck owner admitted that using the mannequin may not have been the safest idea.
What was intended as a theft deterrent instead triggered a violent reaction—highlighting how unpredictable such situations can become.
