Food assistance program supports Kentucky seniors struggling with food insecurity

LEXINGTON, Ky. , When we think about food insecurity, children and working families usually come to mind first. However, older adults and seniors frequently struggle to put nutritious meals on the table, especially when managing tight, fixed budgets.

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program steps in to bridge this gap. This federally funded initiative supplies monthly packages filled with healthy, shelf-stable groceries to eligible adults aged 60 and older.

These food boxes come stocked with everyday essentials, including canned proteins, cereal, milk, pasta, and rice.

Across Kentucky, roughly 837,000 individuals face hunger every day, and God’s Pantry Food Bank notes that one out of every eight of them is a senior.

“Last year we distributed over 6.5 million pounds of food through this program, so it’s quite impactful in that way,” said Alex Maddox, marketing and communications director for God’s Pantry Food Bank. “Each month we’re serving almost 14,500 older adults and neighbors here at God’s Pantry Food Bank, and there are still spots available.”

Everyday expenses continue to climb, intensifying the financial strain on older community members. God’s Pantry points out that these rising costs often force seniors to choose between keeping groceries in the pantry and filling necessary medical prescriptions.

“Rising costs, those continued pressures that households are experiencing, the same thing is happening with our older adult neighbors,” Maddox said. “They’re often having to make difficult, difficult decisions between purchasing groceries or filling a prescription.”

God’s Pantry emphasizes that the program helps relieve this burden by providing reliable, wholesome food each month.

Partner agencies distribute these food packages across Kentucky, allowing qualifying seniors to collect them conveniently in their local communities.

God’s Pantry confirms that open spots remain in the program. Seniors interested in checking their eligibility can easily get in touch with the food bank or visit its official website.
