The Garden at City Tavern has reopened for the summer, offering a picturesque park-like atmosphere complete with light fare, canned cocktails, mocktails, and encounters with some of history’s most iconic figures.
City Tavern was originally constructed in 1773. After being destroyed by fire in the 1800s, it was reconstructed for the nation’s bicentennial in 1976. The establishment ran as a restaurant until the pandemic forced its closure, after which the building fell into disrepair. To mark America 250, Historic Philadelphia, Inc., working alongside Independence National Historical Park, has transformed the garden behind City Tavern into an inviting new spot for dining and drinks.
The beverage offerings feature a selection of canned cocktails, mocktails, and local beers. The food menu, provided by Cescaphe, consists of light bites including a sharable charcuterie board, a vegan wrap, and a turkey sandwich, along with other options. The ambiance is further enhanced by “colonial” games such as cornhole.
Guests wandering through the garden will come across History Makers, historical interpreters who bring real figures from the past to life. The experience represents a contemporary revival of a storied location.
