Major Crash in Wilmington Causes Widespread Damage

Authorities are investigating a serious hit-and-run crash in Wilmington that left one person injured and caused significant property damage, including a gas leak and downed power lines.

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on April 16 near East 23rd and North Market streets.


SUV Flips After Collision

According to the Wilmington Fire Department, the crash began when an SUV collided with another occupied vehicle.

The SUV then flipped multiple times, striking utility poles and causing extensive damage across the area.


Homes Damaged, Gas Leak Reported

Officials said the vehicle:

  • Knocked down two utility poles
  • Brought down several power lines
  • Crashed into three row houses

At least two of the homes suffered structural damage. Additionally, gas meters were torn from the buildings, leading to a dangerous gas leak.


Driver Flees Scene

After the crash, the SUV driver reportedly exited the vehicle and fled the scene.

The driver of the other car was transported to a hospital. Authorities have not yet released details about the extent of their injuries.


Road Closures and Investigation Ongoing

Police shut down parts of the surrounding area as crews worked to secure the scene and address hazards.

Road closures included:

  • Market Street between East 22nd and 24th streets
  • East 23rd Street between North Tatnall and Lamotte streets

Investigators have not yet confirmed whether the suspect has been located.


Officials Clarify Details

Authorities initially reported a pedestrian may have been involved, but later confirmed that no pedestrians were struck in the incident.
