NASA Confirms Meteor Fireball Over Philadelphia Region, Hundreds Report Sighting

A bright fireball that streaked across the sky Tuesday afternoon captured attention across multiple states, prompting hundreds of eyewitness reports and an official analysis from NASA.

Meteor Spotted Over East Coast

According to NASA, the meteor became visible at approximately 2:34 p.m. at an altitude of about 48 miles above the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast near Mastic Beach on Long Island.

Traveling at an estimated 30,000 miles per hour, the fireball moved southwest across the region.

Disintegration Over New Jersey

NASA reported that the object eventually burned up in the atmosphere at around 27 miles above Galloway Township, preventing any impact on the ground.

Hundreds Witness Rare Sky Event

The American Meteor Society recorded more than 200 sightings from residents across several states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, and Connecticut.

Videos shared online show a bright streak flashing across the sky in daylight, surprising many observers.

No Threat to Public Safety

Events like this are not uncommon, as most meteors disintegrate before reaching Earth’s surface. Officials confirmed there were no injuries or damage linked to the fireball.
