ST. LOUIS, Mo. — A surge of gun violence over the Easter weekend has left the city of St. Louis reeling, as multiple shootings across several neighborhoods resulted in three deaths and six injuries within just 12 hours, according to authorities.
Police say the incidents, many of which occurred near gas stations and local businesses, unfolded across Downtown West, Soulard, North City, and South City, raising concerns among residents and business owners about public safety.
Downtown West Shooting Sparks Concern Among Business Owners
One of the early incidents took place around 2:30 a.m. Saturday outside a well-known venue in Downtown West. A 30-year-old man was shot by someone in a passing vehicle and remains in critical but stable condition.
Business owner Andre Stith, who operates the establishment with his family, expressed frustration over the violence impacting local businesses.
“We’re trying to build something positive here for the community,” Stith said. “People shouldn’t bring violence into places meant for families and entertainment.”
Stith noted that despite employing off-duty security officers and maintaining surveillance systems, rising foot traffic in the area may be contributing to safety challenges. He suggested measures such as restricting alley access to prevent suspicious activity.
Gas Stations Become Hotspots for Violence
Authorities identified a troubling pattern, with several shootings occurring at or near gas stations:
- South Grand Boulevard (Afternoon): A 15-year-old was shot in what investigators believe may have been a self-defense incident.
- Soulard Neighborhood (Evening): A confrontation inside a convenience store escalated into gunfire outside, leaving a 21-year-old man dead and two others injured.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes, with nearby stores going into lockdown as shots rang out.
“Employees were yelling to lock the doors. No one could leave,” one witness recalled.
Violence Continues Into the Night
The wave of shootings persisted across the city into early Sunday morning:
- North City (8:00 p.m.): A dispute inside a gas station ended with a 31-year-old man killed and another injured.
- South City (10:00 p.m.): A 31-year-old woman was critically wounded after gunfire struck her vehicle.
- Mount Pleasant (1:00 a.m.): A man was shot and killed at a gas station on South Broadway.
Community Calls for Urgent Action
Residents and business owners are now urging city leaders to take stronger action to curb the violence. Many fear that increasing crime could deter customers and damage neighborhoods.
Stith emphasized the importance of community responsibility and accountability:
“There are cameras everywhere. People committing these crimes will be caught. You’ve got one life — don’t throw it away.”
Ongoing Investigation
Police continue to investigate all incidents and are asking anyone with information to come forward. Authorities have not confirmed whether the shootings are connected.
As St. Louis grapples with the aftermath of a violent holiday weekend, community members are calling for immediate solutions to restore safety and prevent further tragedies.
