A man from Plainfield has been sentenced to prison after admitting to sexually abusing students during his time working at a high school in New York.
Sentence and Charges
Reid Kappler, 32, received a sentence of six and a half years in prison, followed by 10 years of post-release supervision. The sentencing took place in Ulster County court.
Kappler previously pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree rape in connection with the abuse.
Abuse Occurred at High School
Prosecutors said the assaults occurred between 2023 and 2024 while Kappler was employed as a custodian and wrestling coach at a high school in Saugerties.
The victims were teenagers between the ages of 15 and 16 at the time of the incidents.
Arrest and Investigation
Authorities arrested Kappler in July 2025 at his residence in the Moosup section of Plainfield. He was later indicted on multiple felony charges, including rape and sexual abuse.
Officials said the case came to light during a separate investigation involving a former local police officer, which remains ongoing.
Prosecutors Emphasize Impact
The district attorney’s office highlighted the lasting harm caused by crimes against minors, noting that such abuse can have long-term emotional and psychological consequences for victims and communities.
Ongoing Legal Matters
While Kappler has been sentenced, related investigations tied to the broader case are still moving through the legal system.
