COMPTON, Calif. — At least three people died in two separate shootings in Compton over the Fourth of July weekend, authorities said.
The first shooting happened around 11:20 p.m. Saturday at an apartment complex on West Laurel Street during a Fourth of July party, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Two people were killed in that shooting. A woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and a man died after being taken to a hospital.
When deputies arrived, they found a crowd of as many as 300 people at the complex, authorities said.
Investigators continued searching Sunday morning for the suspected shooter. No arrests had been announced.
A separate Fourth of July celebration was interrupted by gunfire a few blocks away, in another part of Compton.
Deputies responded to a homicide investigation near Grandee Avenue and 132nd Street around 12:10 a.m. Sunday, authorities said. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, and another was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Video from the scene showed paramedics rushing one person into an ambulance while another person lay on the pavement.
No arrests had been announced in the second shooting as of Sunday.
Police said there is no evidence linking the second shooting to the incident on West Laurel Street.
