22 Buddhist monks arrested in Sri Lanka over alleged drug smuggling

Authorities in Sri Lanka have arrested 22 Buddhist monks accused of attempting to smuggle a large quantity of cannabis through an international airport.

Arrest at major airport

The group was detained at Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo after arriving from Thailand.

Customs officials said the monks had been abroad for about four days before returning late Saturday night.

Large drug seizure

Authorities reported discovering approximately 242 pounds (around 110 kg) of cannabis, described as a potent strain known as Kush.

  • Each individual allegedly carried about 11 pounds
  • The drugs were hidden in false compartments inside luggage
  • Items like sweets and school supplies were used to conceal the stash

Officials said this marks the largest single seizure of this type at the airport and the first time Buddhist monks have been involved in such a case there.

Possible lack of awareness

Investigators are considering the possibility that the monks may not have known about the drugs in their luggage, according to local reports. The investigation is ongoing to determine responsibility.

Additional arrest and response

A separate individual, identified as “Amitananda,” was later detained in connection with the case.

The monks’ religious order has publicly condemned the incident, stating it will take strict action—including expulsion—against anyone found guilty.

Why this case stands out

This unusual case has drawn widespread attention due to:

  • The large volume of drugs involved
  • The religious status of those arrested
  • Questions over whether it was a deliberate act or a coordinated smuggling setup

Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the full details behind the incident.
