1 hospitalized, family pet dies in Hamden house fire, officials say

HAMDEN, CT — Officials said a Sunday morning fire on Grandview Avenue in Hamden left one resident hospitalized and claimed the life of a family pet.

Authorities reported that crews rescued two dogs and two cats from the home. AMR personnel and Hamden’s Animal Control officer treated the animals at the scene, and officials expect them to recover fully.

“Sadly, one family pet died in the fire from smoke inhalation,” officials wrote in a post on the Hamden Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Fire crews responded around 8:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a structure fire on Grandview Avenue.

“Rescue 2 arrived on scene to a heavy smoke condition and zero visibility,” officials wrote. “They were able to contain a fire in the basement with an extinguisher before Engine 2 arrived and extinguished the remaining fire. The fire was contained to the basement but the house suffered extensive heat and smoke damage throughout the home. One occupant was transported to the hospital by AMR for evaluation.”

Officials said the American Red Cross responded to the scene and assisted the family.

Fire departments from Cheshire, New Haven, and North Haven provided station coverage while crews handled the fire.

“The Hamden Fire Marshal Office stated that the fire started on a flat top grill,” officials wrote. “An occupant tried to extinguish the blaze but the fire spread rapidly and the occupants had to vacate the home and call 911.”
