teenager charged in Carr Square killing after shooting at passing car

ST. LOUIS – Authorities have charged a St. Louis teenager in connection with a fatal shooting in Carr Square, where he allegedly fired at a passing vehicle, killing the driver.

The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. on Oct. 18, 2025, in the 1600 block of Biddle Street.

According to a probable cause statement from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, 18-year-old Ervin L. Cage Jr. got a ride to the area intending to meet a female. He went to her residence, but she refused to let him inside.

Police say Cage left the home but stayed in the neighborhood for nearly an hour, openly carrying a firearm.

Meanwhile, another woman, Raykel Thompson, had just left her mother’s home in the same neighborhood. She got into her car and tried to leave the area. As she drove past Cage, he turned and fired 10 shots at the vehicle. Police said Cage then reloaded his gun with a new magazine and fired another 10 shots.

Police said Cage fled the neighborhood and arranged for someone to pick him up.

Thompson, 25, died at the scene.

Officers took Cage into custody on Tuesday, March 17. Police said he admitted to the shooting during questioning.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Cage with first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. He made his first court appearance Thursday and remains jailed without bond.
