Description

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A man has been arrested after allegedly shooting at an employee who was on break outside the Peterbilt dealership in northeast Springfield.

According to online court records, Joshua Cody Dansby, 38, has been charged with first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, and two counts of armed criminal action.

A probable cause statement from the Springfield Police Department (SPD) says the incident happened at around 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 11. The victim, an employee of Peterbilt, was on break and sitting at a picnic table south of the shop. The statement says the victim noticed Dansby, who he had never previously met, lingering in the area.

The probable cause statement says Dansby walked up behind the victim, who heard a single gunshot and immediately turned around to find Dansby pointing a handgun directly at him. The victim told SPD that Dansby was clearly trying to chamber a second round of ammunition.

The victim hid behind a tree to avoid being shot, documents say, and yelled out to Dansby, asking "What are you doing?" Documents say Dansby responded by saying "I don't know."

Officers with the Strafford Police Department found and detained Dansby near I-44 east of Peterbilt. When SPD took custody of him, documents say he told police "I just shot someone." He initially refused to speak with police, but initiated a conversation with an officer, confirming the gun was in the grass east of Peterbilt. When the officer asked if Dansby knew the victim, Dansby told him it would sound odd, but he had believed the victim was his father.

Documents say it was later determined that the gun Dansby used was stolen from a vehicle on the Peterbilt parking lot and contained a single round of ammunition.

SPD also determined Dansby had multiple prior felony convictions from Oklahoma for charges that include aggravated assault and battery, burglary, domestic assault and sexual battery.

Dansby is being held in the Greene County Jail without bond.
