A cyclospora outbreak tied to a major lettuce recall has taken a new turn after federal regulators reported a false-positive test result.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said testing of Taylor Farms lettuce produced a false-positive result for the cyclospora parasite, which has caused thousands of illnesses nationwide.
Taylor Farms has already recalled dozens of products that were sourced from central Mexico and distributed across 27 states, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Despite the false-positive test, the recall remains in effect because of possible contamination, according to the FDA.
The FDA and state partners continue to collect and analyze product samples as the investigation proceeds.
Cyclosporiasis cases occur every year, but more cases have been reported this year than is typical, according to health officials.
