Court: Oklahoma man sentenced after off-duty officer stops bank robbery

CHOCTAW, Okla.  – An Oklahoma man is heading back to federal prison after attempting to rob a Choctaw bank.

On March 28, 2025, 48-year-old Jerry Ray Brown walked into the First National Bank in Choctaw and approached a teller window, demanding access to the vault.

What Brown didn’t know was that the employee standing behind the counter was an off-duty police officer working security at the bank.

The officer drew his weapon, sending Brown fleeing from the scene.

Investigators tracked Brown down, and authorities arrested and indicted him on a charge of attempted bank robbery.

In November, Brown pleaded guilty to the charge.

Last week, U.S. District Judge Timothy DeGiusti sentenced Brown to 66 months in federal prison.

Judge DeGiusti noted that Brown had previously served 51 months in federal prison for multiple bank robberies in 2020 — and that his time behind bars clearly did nothing to deter him from trying again.

According to KTUL, Brown was a former captain of the Tulsa Fire Department.
