A Rhode Island man died Wednesday night after his pickup truck crashed into a house in Killingly, according to the Connecticut State Police.
Investigators said a 2023 GMC Sierra was traveling westbound on Route 101 near Valley Road around 10:21 p.m. when the driver failed to navigate a curve. The truck veered off the road onto the westbound shoulder, where it hit multiple mailboxes, a street sign, and a home.
State police identified the driver as 42-year-old Matthew James Sherman of Foster, Rhode Island. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
State police said the crash caused “catastrophic” damage to the home. A report described the front of the house as “destroyed,” with structural damage affecting the entire residence.
Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) crews searched the property and confirmed no one was inside the home when the crash happened.
Authorities shut down Route 101 between Chestnut Hill Road and Bailey Hill Road for several hours following the incident. The roadway reopened shortly before 5 a.m.
The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (CARS) also responded to assist at the scene.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
