Authorities have made an arrest in connection with the 2022 fatal shooting of a teenager in Fairfield, bringing new developments to a case that remained unresolved for nearly four years.

Teen Killed During Large Gathering

According to the Fairfield Police Department, the incident occurred on July 9, 2022, when officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire at a crowded event near a banquet hall on Kings Highway East, close to Calvin United Church.

Police said hundreds of people were attending a party at the time. When officers arrived, they discovered two minors suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both victims were taken to a hospital, where 15-year-old Zion Burton later died from his injuries. The second victim survived.

Suspect Identified and Arrested

Investigators identified a suspect who was 16 years old at the time of the shooting. After years of investigative work, authorities gathered sufficient evidence and executed an arrest warrant on April 3, 2026.

The suspect, whose identity has not been publicly released due to being a juvenile, is currently being held at the Manson Correctional Youth Institution on unrelated charges, including murder, first-degree assault, and carrying a pistol without a permit.

Case May Move to Adult Court

Officials stated that while the case is currently being handled within the juvenile justice system, it is expected to be transferred to adult court due to the severity of the charges.

Police Highlight Years of Investigation

Michael Paris emphasized that the arrest was the result of sustained investigative efforts rather than a single breakthrough.

He also acknowledged the lasting impact on the victim’s family, noting that while the arrest cannot undo their loss, it represents progress toward justice.

Community Impact and Ongoing Process

Police extended their condolences to the family of Zion Burton and recognized the emotional toll the incident has had on both families involved.

The investigation underscores the long-term commitment of law enforcement to resolving violent crimes, even years after they occur.
