Authorities in Batesville, Arkansas are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting after a suspect in an earlier violent incident was killed during a confrontation with a corrections K-9 unit.
Deadly Shooting Triggers State Investigation
The Arkansas State Police (ASP) Criminal Investigation Division has launched a formal probe into the use of deadly force by the Arkansas Department of Corrections (DOC) K-9 team.
The investigation follows a chain of events that began with a shooting reported in Independence County, Arkansas earlier this week.
Initial Shooting Leaves One Dead, One Injured
According to officials, deputies from the Independence County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 3:15 a.m. on March 23 at a residence on Brown Lane.
When officers arrived:
- Two individuals were found with gunshot wounds
- One victim was pronounced dead at the scene
- The second victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment
Authorities identified 48-year-old Christopher Lee Johnston as the suspect, who fled the scene before deputies arrived.
Suspect Located, Fatally Shot by K-9 Team
On March 24, Johnston was located in a wooded area near the original crime scene. Officials say members of the DOC K-9 unit encountered him in a nearby field.
During that confrontation:
- Officers used deadly force
- Johnston was pronounced dead at the scene
