DC weather: Washington, DC faces freezing start before gradual warmup

WASHINGTON – A burst of March chill gripped the region on Wednesday, as overnight temperatures dipped below freezing and morning readings in the upper 20s gave the Washington, D.C. area a winterlike feel.

What we know:

FOX 5’s Taylor Grenda reports that any wet surfaces early in the day are likely frozen after several hours of below-freezing temperatures.

This cold spell arrives while much of the eastern U.S. stays locked in a deep chill, even as a growing heat dome in the Southwest is expected to push potential record highs from Las Vegas to Phoenix.

Clouds will gradually clear throughout the day, but temperatures will remain well below normal, with highs only reaching the low 40s—far short of the mid-50s typically seen in mid-March.

Temperatures will drop back near freezing Wednesday night before a gradual warmup begins Thursday, with highs climbing back into the 50s.

Spring officially starts Friday, bringing warmer weather in the 60s that will carry into the weekend before cooler conditions return early next week.
